Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
